Day 5
Your favorite comfort foods
Your favorite comfort foods
First, let me start by telling you a little of my background to help you understand why I love these foods so much. I am the oldest of 3 girls in my family, my middle sister is 3 years younger than me, and my youngest is 5 years younger. All of our birthdays are within 2 weeks of each other. Mine comes first, at the end of September, then my youngest sisters mid-October and finally my middle sister, at the end of October. Each year, for as long as I can remember my sisters and I choose our birthday dinners, My momma, or g-ma would cook whatever we wanted. I can always remember choosing this pinto beans,cornbread,mac-n-cheese and fried potatoes and instead of cake and ice cream I would choose Apple dumplings with vanilla pudding, topped with melted red hots! I'll admit it isn't the healthiest choice, but it reminds me of my grandparents. I love the memories and association I have with it. When I eat it, I'm flooded with the memories of growing up in Michigan and the fun times I had staying at my grandparents house. As my sisters and I got older, we would talk about what each of us were going to choose as our meal, and each of us would plan what we liked, to make sure we would all be getting one of our favorite, but rarely cooked meals.
I love this meal, and all the memories I have to accompany it! I have never made it on my own, I just don't think it would be as special.
